THE WOLFE PACK AT KANAWHA SPA
SAVE THE DATES

April 13-15, 2012

The most famous meal in the mystery novel genre is the American Dinner at the Kanawha Spa in Rex Stout's Too Many Cooks.  To pay homage to Mr. Wolfe and his love for fine cuisine, we have arranged for the Wolfe Pack to spent a weekend at The Greenbrier, a newly renovated,  five-star, five-diamond  luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.  Most members of the Pack consider The Greenbrier to have been the inspiration for Kanawha Spa.  This world-class hotel is an American institution and served as the unofficial summer capitol for Southern aristocracy during the antebellum period.  Today, The Greenbrier provides a full range of activities, boasts a world class chef, a casino, the Congressional Bunker (from the Cold War era) and is an idyllic vacation spot.  There is much to do at the resort and we also promise a full range of Wolfean events.

The program includes the following Wolfean activities:  Two banquets from the Nero Wolfe Cookbook: one featuring dishes prepared at Kanawha Spa (not the American or French banquets) and the other from dishes served at Rusterman's.  We will arrange for  the Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney, as a speaker, along with other speakers and special events.

Please see the Events page for full details and to print and mail the sigh-up form.

SCOOP! SCOOP!
Lon Cohen Reports on 2012 Nero Wolfe TV Production in Italy
(also see the information about the 1960s TV production)

October 12, 2011 Update from the Production Company

Francesco Benzi, long time Wolfe Pack member, reports the following information from Italy, along with photos of the lead characters:
Hi Carol,
I have most interesting and surprising news about the new production of Nero Wolfe, expected to appear in 2012. No, the main character wouldn't be Paolo Ferrari, the old Archie (by the way he is still working in TV, but at the age of 82 he now only plays other roles, still with the class of all time). Nero Wolfe will be played by Francesco Pannofino, so far a well endowed character actor (see some pictures in the attached file). He is 53, and except for the moustache, that will reasonably be cut for the shooting, could make a good job. Archie will be Pietro Sermonti who looks also as a believable American detective.

But the more surprising part is that there will be a curious, perhaps shocking variation in the setting. The eight episodes will be set in Italy.

Here is the Production pre-publication information (translated by Francesco):
Set in 1959, due to disagreements with the FBI, Nero Wolfe, America's best detective, moves to Italy along with his faithful assistant Archie Goodwin. He has two main goals: to find a chef to meet his gourmet requirements and to setup, in as short time a as possible, a large greenhouse for his precious orchids: hobbies that require dedication, concentration and above all ... money.

Pushed to work by the ever-practical Goodwin, who procures customers, Wolfe investigates murder cases that take place in Rome: a young woman poisoned during a gala, a university professor murdered with a small needle point, a rich philanthropist hit by a car in mysterious circumstances ... still without leaving [his new] home!

Wolfe deals with cold cases that the Italian police ignored or where they are simply groping in the dark. This is why Commissioner Graziani (the Italian version of Cramer) and his lieutenant Bordon (Stebbins) hate him and his assistant Goodwin.

Also the Italian counterparts of Fritz, Saul Panzer and Lon Cohen (in Italy will be a woman) will be part of the cast.
I don’t know whether the stories will be adaptations of the classical novels or new at all, probably a mix. I am very curious and I am looking forward to see the results of this audacious translation. I hope it won’t be a disappointment, but I promise you that as long as the series will be broadcast I will send you a review with the critical attitude of a Nero Wolfe addict for over 40 years.

Also the following information is copied from James Enge's May, 25, 2011 blog, Ambrose & Elsewhere:

"I have not yet met Archie Goodwin or Nero Wolfe running around Rome. But I could have: someone is apparently making an Italian version of the Nero Wolfe stories and they were filming along the Tiber last week. I got this exciting shot of one of the production trailers.

The idea of Nero Wolfe in a Roman taxi will be especially amusing to those acquainted with both dangerous mythological beasts. I wish Rex Stout had thought to write that one up."

Guy K. Stewart's new Kinle e-book, The Spies from Princeton, is not your run-of-the-mill, spy-shoot-em-up. Instead, Mr. Stewart's approach is more deliciously insidious.
